A DECREASE IN MEAT CONSUMPTION
Spain: decrease in meat consumption for the 3rd year in a row
The eating habits of Spaniards have changed.
29% of them say they have decreased their consumption of red meat, and some admit to following the current trend of being “flexitarians” i.e. part-time vegetarians.
In 2015, this consumption was 2,236 million tons compared to 2,293 million tons in 2014, and 2389 million tons in 2013. There was a 1.6% decrease from last year.
This decrease does not affect all stores.
In fact, there was a 7% increase in meat consumption in discount stores, while there was an 8% decrease in specialty stores.
According to a study by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the pork sector is the only one that has been spared (1% increase in volume for the processed meat sector). The sector of sausages, hams and sausages has decreased by 1%, poultry 3.2%, and cattle 3.8%.
